The long-term shift of institutional investors (state and local pension funds in particular) from bonds and other debt instruments to equities continued into 2007. Total institutional investor assets have risen tenfold from $2.7 trillion in 1980 to $27.1 trillion in 2006, with open-end mutual funds experiencing the most rapid growth of any institutional investor category. Meanwhile, by 2007, institutional investors accounted for an eye-popping 76.1 percent ownership of the largest 1,000 U.S. corporations, up from 67.9 percent just two years earlier.
