Rising retirements and a shrinking supply of younger workers are transforming the workplace. The Conference Board Mature Workforce Initiative is committed to helping employers engage and develop mature employees within the rapidly changing multigenerational workplace. Our evolving work is validated by frequent interaction with our 2,000 member companies as we respond to their emerging business issues.

The Mature Workforce Initiative uses The Conference Board's proven forums of conferences, councils, and research working groups to help executives find strategies and solutions for a maturing and multigenerational workplace. Participating senior executives:

  • Draw upon the expertise and resources of The Conference Board
  • Engage in frank, confidential dialogue with peers
  • Learn and evaluate promising and proven practices
  • Find practical solutions to multigenerational workplace challenges regarding pension plans, phased retirement, flexible work arrangements, knowledge transfer, and other issues that affect business performance
  • Get help with a host of mature workforce questions, including:
    • How do we recruit, engage, and retain mature workers?
    • How do we navigate the legal thickets surrounding retirement?
    • How do we transfer critical knowledge from one generation to another?

Changes and Choices The Rapidly Evolving Business Cases for Employing Mature Workers

Mature Workforce Initiative findings show there is no one-size-fits-all business case for hiring and retaining mature workers. Depending on their industry, leadership, and corporate culture, companies will use these employees in different ways. Organizations will employ more mature workers than ever before, due to the number of baby boomers reaching retirement age who wish to continue working either because they feel they have many productive years ahead of them or because the economic downturn has left them financially unable to retire.
