Brian Schaitkin is an economist at The Conference Board. Schaitkin joined The Conference Board in 2007 as a research analyst for the Global Indicators Research Institute program. Schaitkin helped develop The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for the Euro Area, which was launched in January 2009. Currently, he is serving as an economist with the same program. Schaitkin co-authored a paper with Ataman Ozyildirim and the late Victor Zarnowitz for The Journal of Forecasting on “Business Cycles in the Euro Area Defi ned with Coincident Economic Indicators and Predicted with Leading Economic Indicators.” Schaitkin conducted forecasting exercises which demonstrated that proposed changes to The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for the United States would improve its forecasting ability and co-wrote two papers describing these changes. In addition, he produces and regularly appears on The Conference Board Economics Watch® European View monthly webcast series and also writes the companion publication. Schaitkin graduated from Columbia University in 2004 with a combined BA in economics and political science. In 2011, he graduated cum laude from the Katholieke Universiteit of Leuven in Belgium with an MA in economics. Before joining The Conference Board, Schaitkin served as an investigator with the New York Civilian Complaint Review Board and also interned with the U.S. State Department Offi ce of Agricultural Trade Policy.
