Labor Economist / Life of Project

Position Summary:

Incumbent will manage and further develop and promote a new data series on labor demand. In addition the position requires undertaking economic research within The Conference Board Economics Research Program. Incumbent should have solid background in economic theory and experience in empirical applications, particularly in the areas of labor economics and consumer theory. Work requires strong data skills and involves analysis of labor market trends, demographics, consumer behavior, productivity, and living standards. . Incumbent must have demonstrated strong writing and communication skills. Incumbent will work independently and in cooperation with the Director of New Initiatives, the Director of Economic Research, the Consumer Research Center (CRC), and other staff members.

Reporting Relationship:

Reports to the Director, New Initiatives and will also receive work assignments from the CRC and other senior members of the Economics Research Program.

Principal Direct Activities:

  1. Primary responsibility for the further development and expansion of a new data series, The Conference Board Help Wanted OnLine Data Series™. Duties include analysis and production of monthly releases of the data, insuring the validity of the data, and development of additional uses of the data for publications and services of The Conference Board.
  2. Provides research support in all phases of the research program, including labor market analysis, productivity and living standards, and consumer behavior.
  3. Contributes to the overall Economics Program through development and support of projects undertaken by the Director of New Initiatives including participation in seminars, programs and activities of the department.
  4. Carries out individual research projects with guidance from the Director of New Initiatives and the CRC.
  5. Conducts projects using survey data from the CRC, the Current Population Survey, and the Consumer Expenditure Survey.
  6. Provides information and analysis to Associates, the press, and the general public through direct contact or request of the Director of New Initiatives or Chief Economist.

Requirements:

Prospective candidates should have a broad understanding of economic theory, solid credentials in labor economics and econometric and statistical skills. We are looking for an individual with strong technical skills, wide interests and curiosity, and the ability to manage, develop and market a data series. A successful candidate will need to work cooperatively with researchers in other fields (e.g. industrial organization, productivity measurement, and demographic analysis) from both the U.S. and abroad. This position requires excellent writing and verbal skills. Project management experience is desirable. Economists at The Conference Board are expected to publish the results of their analysis and make presentations to both academic and business audiences.
